Kanaval Jacmel is a documentary film that bolsters the unique perspective and culture of the small yet mighty town of Jacmel, Haiti. Located in the heart of the Caribbean, Jacmel has much to offer the world historically and artistically.

The film contextualizes Jacmel’s annual Carnival by showcasing some of the most notable pillars of its history as a beacon of the New World. It regrettably comes as no surprise that many are unaware of Jacmel’s significance such as being the first Caribbean town to have telephones, portable water, and electricity. And due to its accessible location, Jacmel was a major loading point for ships heading for Europe, uniting the two worlds. It’s essential to have Haiti’s artistic and cultural roots documented and shared with communities who may not see Haiti as anything more than a vacation destination.

Kanaval Jacmel is important to Haitian culture, but it’s also valuable to Black and Spanish cultures since Jacmel is the melting pot of Haiti.

Ultimately, Kanaval Jacmel will enrich the lives and knowledge of those who watch, creating a greater sense of empathy and understanding for the island nation of Haiti. This documentary comes on the heels of a global sense of urgency to preserve and prevent the demise of decades old cultural customs within the contemporary virtual world. We can do our part in preserving and sharing the elaborate culture of Jacmel, Haiti.
